Top 10 things to know PCSing to Tampa

Moving to a new city can be exciting and daunting, especially if you’re a military family preparing for a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) to Tampa, Florida. Tampa is a vibrant and diverse Gulf Coast city known for its beautiful beaches, cultural attractions, and warm weather. To make your transition as smooth as possible, here are the top 10 things to know when you PCS to Tampa.
Embrace the Weather
Tampa’s climate is defined by hot, humid summers and mild winters. Be prepared for warm and wet weather from June to September. Invest in lightweight, breathable clothing and a good umbrella. The mild winters are a welcome change for those coming from colder regions. Basically, no need to unpack your winter coats.
Housing
Tampa offers a variety of housing options, from apartments in the city to family homes in the suburbs. Research the housing market well in advance to find a neighborhood that suits your preferences and budget. MacDill Air Force Base is a significant military presence in Tampa, and many service members choose to live near the base. Housing can be difficult to navigate when you are doing research from your current duty station. We have a ton of different areas to choose from but if commute time is important to you, then ask someone who has lived here a while. The further away from base, the more affordable the housing. I will be breaking down the neighborhoods in an upcoming blog post to help orient you while you are doing your research.
Traffic and Transportation:
Tampa has its share of traffic congestion, especially during rush hours. Let me tell you, Florida has some BAD drivers. During the winter months when we have an influx of snow birders, you will find traffic is BAD. Consider the location of your workplace and the proximity to good schools when choosing your home. There is the Selmon tollway and the “Vet” which are good in my opinion and can help with the frustration of traffic. It is important to stay closer to these two toll roads the further out you live. The city does have a bus system and trolley service, but having a car is usually more convenient. Also, check out MacDill’s Transportation Incentive Program for an alternatives for beating the traffic.
Beach Life:
Tampa Bay is famous for its stunning beaches. Clearwater Beach, St. Pete Beach, Honeymoon Island, Pass A Grille, and Fort De Soto Park are popular destinations for residents and tourists. Enjoy water sports, sunsets, and the relaxed Florida beach lifestyle.
Cost of Living:
The cost of living in Tampa is “ok.” When we came from Ft. Campbell, we had to adjust to housing costs and overall cost of living. Utilizing the PX and commissary will definitely help with things, but it will depend on where you live. A trip on base may take more time than it is worth. Cosco does offer a military membership option, which could help with the cost of groceries (COSCO)
Cultural and Outdoor Activities:
Tampa boasts a thriving cultural scene with museums, theaters, and a vibrant arts community. Don’t forget to visit the Tampa Museum of Art (Military Discount), the Florida Aquarium (10% military discount), and the Tampa Bay History Center (Blue Star Museum). Explore the great outdoors at parks like the Hillsborough River State Park and the beautiful botanical gardens.
Sports Fan Paradise:
Tampa is a sports lover’s dream. With professional football, hockey, and baseball teams, there’s always an exciting game to attend. Join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tampa Bay Lightning, or Tampa Bay Rays fandom to taste the local sports culture. Also, several professional baseball teams enjoy their spring training in the Tampa Bay area (Tampa Bay MLB Spring Training). We have been to a few games and the tickets are affordable and the weather is nice.
Education and Schools:
If you have children, research the school districts in Tampa to find the best fit for your family. The Hillsborough County Public Schools system serves the city and its suburbs. There are also many private and charter school options. Here is the link for the Military Families FAQ for schools. I also have a point of contact with the school district, shoot me a text at 931-237-6592 and I will forward you her contact information.
Embrace the Local Cuisine:
Tampa offers a unique culinary experience with influences from Cuban, Spanish, and Southern cuisines. Take advantage of trying Cuban sandwiches at the Interbay Meat Market aka Green Grocerer, seafood at Hula Bay right on the water, and key lime pie. Ybor City is known for its historic district and vibrant dining scene. I gained about 10 pounds when I first moved to Tampa, the food here is GOOD.
Hurricane Preparedness:
Tampa is in a hurricane-prone area. Familiarize yourself with hurricane preparedness and have a plan in place. Stock up on essential supplies, follow local news and guidance, and know your evacuation routes.
Conclusion:
As you prepare for your PCS to Tampa, remember that this vibrant city has a lot to offer. From its diverse culture to beautiful beaches, you’ll find that Tampa is a wonderful place to call home. Embrace the tropical climate, explore the local cuisine, and make the most of your time in this unique and inviting city. With a little research and preparation, your move to Tampa can be a successful and enjoyable experience.
